{"id":1255,"date":"2013-05-15T18:31:06","date_gmt":"2013-05-15T22:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/voice\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2014-09-22T09:27:55","modified_gmt":"2014-09-22T14:27:55","slug":"transradial-approach-surging-in-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/voice\/2013\/05\/15\/transradial-approach-surging-in-the-u-s-1255","title":{"rendered":"Transradial Approach Surging in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1257\" alt=\"Radial Diagram\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/voice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/radial_diagram_140sq.gif\" width=\"140\" height=\"140\" \/>Interventional cardiologists&#8230;listen up!!<\/p>\n<p>Stent and angioplasty procedures in the United States are now done through the wrist <a title=\"Adoption of Radial Access and Comparison of Outcomes to Femoral Access in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: An Updated Report from the National Cardiovascular Data Registry (2007\u20132012)\" href=\"http:\/\/circ.ahajournals.org\/content\/127\/23\/2295.full\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>15-20% of the time<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. This is a big change!<\/p>\n<p>Angioplasty.Org started its <a title=\"Transradial Access Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/radial\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Transradial Center<\/a> six years ago. At that time maybe 2-3% of procedures in the United States were done via the wrist. Virtually all diagnostic angiograms and PCIs (angioplasty or stent procedures) were being done via the femoral (leg\/groin) artery, a technique invented and refined by Dr. Melvin Judkins over a half century ago.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It was in 1992 that Dutch cardiologist, Dr. Ferdinand Kiemeneij, performed the <a title=\"Happy 20th Anniversary to Transradial Intervention\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/voice\/2012\/08\/14\/happy-20th-anniversary-to-transradial-intervention-tri-99\" target=\"_blank\">first angioplasty done via the wrist (transradial) approach.<\/a> And it took a long time for his technique to filter through to the cardiology community. Currently the radial approach is utilized in 50% or more of procedures done in many European countries. And, while adoption of the wrist technique in the United States has definitely been behind Europe, today we are seeing 1 out of 6 procedures in the U.S. being done via the wrist.<\/p>\n<p>But, according to Dr. Sanjit Jolly of McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, <strong>in three to five years, half of all U.S. procedures will be done through the wrist<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Get that interventional cardiologists? HALF!<\/p>\n<p>So learning the wrist approach for PCI is crucial, critical for the interventional cardiologist in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The benefits are multiple: patient comfort, reduced complications, and reduced costs. To this end, over the month of June, Angioplasty.Org will be featuring interviews with leaders in transradial interventions, reviews of the current clinical literature and data supporting the safety and efficacy of the transradial approach.
