Chan, MD, MSc\" width=\"140\" height=\"140\" \/>Dr. Paul Chan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/stentcenter\/paul_chan_interview.html\">sat down with me recently<\/a> to talk about the study published this week in JAMA that he served as lead author on. The article, &#8220;<em><a title=\"Angioplasty and Stents Inappropriate Only 4% of the Time\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/voice\/2011\/07\/05\/angioplasty-and-stents-inappropriate-only-4-of-the-time-562\" target=\"_blank\">Appropriateness of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention<\/a>.<\/em>&#8221; has generated hundreds of news reports about &#8220;unnecessary stenting&#8221;, &#8220;overuse of angioplasty&#8221;, etc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">In my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ptca.org\/stentcenter\/paul_chan_interview.html\" target=\"_blank\">exclusive interview with Dr. Chan<\/a>, we talked about the real meaning of this study, what it was meant to do (benchmark the use of PCI in the U.S.) and how it&#8217;s being (mis) interpreted by the press (I&#8217;ll be discussing this aspect in a subsequent post).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodytext\">Dr. Chan also discusses the field of cardiology, its self-reflection, shown in studies like this one, and also some ways in which clinical cardiologists, referring physicians and&#8230;patients(!)&#8230;need to be brought into the decision-making process.
