Volcano Announces First Permanent Installations of the Integrated s5i IVUS Imaging System
Volcano's s5i Provides a Customized IVUS Imaging Solution for Any Cath Lab Configuration

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif., October 11, 2006 -- Volcano Corporation (Nasdaq: VOLC) today announced the first permanent installations of the s5i IVUS (intravascular ultrasound) imaging system in both the U.S. and Europe. The s5i is Volcano's first IVUS system that can be integrated into any new or existing cath lab configuration.

Through a series of customizable components, Volcano can now tailor an integrated IVUS solution to the unique user and workflow needs for any vendor's cath lab type or configuration. This can include multiple controllers and monitors, as well as flexibility in the physical location of the console. The s5i also incorporates real time VH™ IVUS functionality that enhances the interpretation of IVUS images.

Scott Huennekens, Volcano president and chief executive officer, commented, "Volcano's integrated IVUS system addresses a number of the historical barriers to using IVUS. Many physicians agree that IVUS provides greater clarity into the complexity of lesions, and greater confidence in optimizing Drug Eluting Stent or Bare Metal Stent placement as part of everyday PCI (percutaneous interventional) procedures. However, IVUS has in the past been cumbersome to use and added considerable time to the total procedure. By integrating the Volcano s5i directly into the lab, IVUS is always there, always on and always ready. With Volcano's s5i, physicians now simply plug the catheter in and begin imaging."

Dr. Steven Bailey at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio commented that, "IVUS is becoming an important therapy enabling technology for everyday PCI. Dr. Bailey continued, "As a leading educational center, we are constantly looking for ways to improve training and the overall learning experience. The Volcano integrated IVUS systems allows for multiple monitors and view points, so image review can take place bedside as well as from the control room and our conference room down the hall. This enhances our ability to include more participants in IVUS image interpretation without forcing trainees to gown up and enter the patient room."

Dr. Pauliina Margolis, Volcano's Medical Director, believes, "physicians today are looking for more exacting ways to increase their confidence when placing Drug Eluting Stents. IVUS is a precise method that helps guide PCI therapy to ensure that bare metal and Drug Eluting Stents are both fully expanded and fully apposed to the vessel wall. Full expansion and apposition are key elements in optimizing stent placement and luminal blood flow. Now that the IVUS system can be integrated into the lab, increasing the speed and access of the procedure, we expect more physicians will explore the benefits of IVUS to help optimize and confirm stent placement."

The Volcano s5i system also incorporates a new suite of functionality designed to make IVUS images easier to collect, interpret, and record for patient follow-up. The automatic border function quickly identifies important lumen and vessel borders and calculates the minimum lumen, area and plaque burden information. The real-time VH™ IVUS functionality collects the full radio-frequency(RF) spectrum of the ultrasound image and quickly classifies tissue into the four primary plaque components; fibrous, fibro-fatty, necrotic core and dense calcium. This data is available real-time to help triage each individual lesion when planning the intervention strategy. The s5i supports the DICOM standards for storage & work list management, enabling fast and efficient communication with hospitals' PACS and information systems.

Among the first centers to install Volcano's s5i systems are leading teaching institutions including: Columbia Presbyterian in New York, NY; Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, CA; Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC; and UNC in Chapel Hill, NC. IVUS integration has also taken place at smaller community hospitals including Katherine Shaw Bethea in Dixon, IL, Western Medical in Anaheim, CA, and Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs, CO. The European launch of the s5i product has also taken place, with the first sites including: Thoraxcenter Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Cardiologisch Centrum Aalst, Belgium; Institut Cardiovasculaire Paris-Sud, Massy, France; Clinique Pasteur, Toulouse, France; West Deutsches HerzZentrum, Essen, Germany; and Uniklinik Kiel, Germany.

The Volcano s5i imaging system is available immediately for installation in the US and Europe.
