Ford Is Discharged After Successful Angioplasty |
|||
| August 28, 2006 -- Former President Gerald Ford was released from the Mayo Clinic today after cardiologists at the Rochester, Minnesota hospital had performed successful angioplasty on Friday, August 25. The 93-year-old former Chief Executive was admitted to the hospital ten days earlier for "testing and evaluation". On Monday the 21st, he received a cardiac pacemaker. The angioplasty procedure was done on Friday and included stents being placed in two of Ford's coronary arteries. After the procedure, he was reported to be "resting comfortably with his wife Betty and family" in his hospital room. Ford has recently suffered from shortness of breath, pneumonia and dizziness. The hospital has not released any further information on President Ford's prognosis, but the immediate outcome of the procedure was that his coronary arteries were opened. The news publicizes the fact that minimally-invasive catheter-based procedures can be done successully on elderly patients who would not be able to tolerate the insult of an open surgical procedure. This topic is one of concern to many families (see our Forum Discussion below). We at Angioplasty.Org also saw a demonstration of how people are using the Internet for health information. On Friday, the day the news about Ford broke, traffic on Angioplasty.Org increased by 30% -- and visitors coming from search engines, such as Google and Yahoo!, where they were searching the term "angioplasty", jumped 300%! related
