Toshiba's Diagnostic Imaging System Used to Investigate Aircraft Component Reliability

TUSTIN, CA — November 21, 2006 — Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc.'s computed tomography (CT) scanner, the Aquilion™ LB, will serve Lockheed Martin's non-destructive testing program (NDT) in Palmdale, Calif. The scanner will be used to ensure the integrity and reliability of aircraft parts.

Toshiba's Aquilion LB was chosen because of the system's unique features including its large-bore opening and large true field-of-view (FOV). Unlike traditional CT scanners that have a maximum opening of 50 cm, the Aquilion LB boasts a 90 cm opening – allowing the system to image larger objects with just one scan. In addition, the system's 70 cm acquired FOV ensures that the entire object is imaged and eliminates the need to scan items in pieces and then reassemble the images for review.

According to Doug Ryan, senior director, CT Business Unit, Toshiba, the installation of the Aquilion LB at Lockheed Martin is a testament to the system's versatility and features. "Lockheed's innovative use of our Aquilion LB ensures that aircraft parts are safe and meet rigid government specifications," said Ryan.

About the Aquilion LB
With the industry's largest bore opening of 90 cm and a 70 cm acquired FOV, the Aquilion LB makes it possible to accurately scan components of various sizes to identify damage and evaluate integrity. In addition, the system's true FOV is 40 percent greater than other large bore CT systems and provides unequaled scan coverage and image quality.
