Helen in California - The Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) device is approved for use in the coronary arteries to break-up heavily calcified narrowings before a stent is placed (pre-treatment), so that the stent can fully expand. The use of IVL in an artery already stented is under study, but not currently an approved use. One of the concerns is that the ultrasound vibrations may compromise the integrity of the stent or its polymeric coating. As for who in California may be using this technology, you might ask your interventional cardiologist, or possibly contact the company, Shockwave Medical.
