November 18, 2010 --
One of the limiting factors for the U.S. adoption of the transradial
approach to catheterization, angioplasty and stenting has been
the relatively small number of practitioners who are trained
in this technique. As more and more patients and referring
physicians learn about the advantages of using the radial artery
in the wrist, there will be increased demand -- which is why
training courses are suddenly appearing throughout
the United States on a monthly basis. The latest course, the
Chicago
Transradial
Summit, will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2010.
Course Program Chair. Dr. Sandeep Nathan, Director of the Interventional
Cardiology
Fellowship Program at the University of Chicago Medical Center,
describes the agenda: |
"This program is designed to provide a
practical, in-depth exposure to performance of the technique,
its application
in various
key patient subsets, relevant technical considerations, and
management of complications. Included will be examination of
the recently
published data, presentation of archived cases with expert
commentary, and
discussion of current controversies in the field. Importantly,
attendees will also gain practical, hands-on experience using
transradial medical
simulation and exposure to an array of dedicated transradial
equipment. This year's theme is 'Perfecting Your Transradial
Technique' and
will focus on bringing our audience practical, straightforward
information needed to begin or expand a transradial practice
through the use of targeted presentations, high-definition
case video, and interactive discussions with our expert panelists
representing
physicians, nurses, and fellows."
The paradox of angioplasty today is that, while
device
technology
has significantly reduced
the rate of procedural
complications
such as recurrent ischemia, infarction, and death,
the most common adverse event in patients undergoing
PCI is bleeding, which is related to the
vascular access site in the groin more than 50% of the time.
In Europe and other countries around the world, the radial artery in the wrist
accounts for a significant number of procedures: it is the preferred
choice for many cardiologists. However,
registry data shows that the radial artery approach
is used in less than 3% of PCI procedures performed in the United States
as
compared
to 40%–50%
worldwide. So courses such as the Chicago Transradial Summit are one
of the few ways in which cardiologists in the U.S. can gain this
knowledge.
Registration for the Chicago course was already
oversubscribed, but the organizers
report that they have
been
able
to increase
the
limit
somewhat,
so interested physicians, technicians and nursing staff are urged
to
register soon
(the recent
SCAI-sponsored course in Boston filled quickly and many potential
attendees had to be turned away).

About The Radial Access Center on Angioplasty.Org
To assist in educating the professional and patient population in the U.S. about
the this technique, Angioplasty.Org created the "Radial
Access Center for Transradial Approach" in 2007, a special
section devoted to information and news about the transradial technique, for
both patients and physicians. The Radial Center features interviews with leading
practitioners of the radial technique, such as Drs. Jeffrey Popma, Sunil Rao,
Mauricio Cohen, John Coppola, Shigeru Saito and Jennifer Tremmel. The section
also maintains a
listing of upcoming training courses in the transradial approach.
For patients there is also a "Hospital
Locator" that lists U.S. centers practicing
radial angiography. As Dr. Howard Cohen of Lenox Hill Hospital
in New York says of the wrist technique, "Patients really
prefer it. 95% of people who've had it both ways would say
'I'm coming back to you, Dr. Cohen because I like this transradial
a lot better than the other way!'
