Erika -- we can't comment on the risks of flying
to Argentina, not knowing your husband's clinical picture. We'd urge you
to consult a
cardiologist who knows his situation. As for afterward and flying back,
the cardiologists in Argentina would be the best judges of that. By the
way, the stent itself was invented by Dr. Julio Palmaz, an Argentinian
radiologist, the first stent graft repair of an aortic aneurysm
was done by Dr. Juan Parodi, also Argentinian -- and the first coronary
bypass graft surgery was done by Dr. Rene Favaloro -- also, you guessed
it, Argentinian. Good luck. Let us know how the procedure went.
Angioplasty.Org Staff, Angioplasty.Org, December 23, 2009
My husband has severe blockage and since we have
no insurance, we are flying to Argentina in January. Is flying safe?
The doctors in India were willing to do either stents or angioplasty if
needed,
but they never said if there is
a risk in flying.
Erika F., Georgia, USA, December 18, 2009
Of course Coronary angioplasty and stents has
risk with it like any other procedure ( but its less than 1 % serious risk). Its
an excellent procedure and
its lifesaving in heart attacks and threatened heart attacks. Its effective
in relieving angina (stable chest pains on exertion) when the medications
are not
effective. However if the angina is not troublesome with medications then you
dont need any angioplasty or stents. Angioplasties are proven by lot of research
studies about its effectiveness and safety.About EECP, its still in early stage
and has shown some effectiveness in very small research studies, but will not
open the artery ( ie clear the blockage). EDTA or chelation is waste of money.
drink a glass of apple juice instead. Myocardial Laser was tried in past but
doest work . So advice is stick with Tablets (statins, aspirin, betablocker
etc), and if tried all medicines and still have chest pains, then go for
angioplasty
or bypass depending on how many narrowings. Stents are still expensive in india
because of cost of drug coated stents (each costs Rs 70000). So if you have
one or 2 blockage, stent is cheaper, but if more than 2 bypass operation
may be cheaper.
Sam, India, December 13, 2009
Miles -- the $10,000 was for the angiogram --
it's a bit misleading to give an estimate for an "angiogram and possible
stent", because an angiogram is an angiogram -- it would have been
helpful for you to know what the cost would be if a blockage was found
and a stent was placed. Although, if a blockage was found, would you say "Don't
open up my coronary artery -- I can't afford it?" This is the big
problem in our nation with uninsured patients and these types of procedures
-- certainly makes a case for some type of health care reform. Interesting
that the Forum also got the post from Liaqat who got three stents in Bangkok
for only $15,000.

I have been put 3 drug-eluting stents (DES) in

I had a stent inserted on 11/5/09 at RVMC in Southern Oregon, and I just
got a bill for $33,708.00 When I was admitted, the estimate for an "Angiogram
and possible stent" was $10,000.00. I have no insurance, and have no idea how
I will pay for this. I'm currently working two jobs trying to pay off dental
bills. How could the cost be $23,000.00 over the estimate?! I got the bill last
evening and haven't slept more than a few hours overnight. I have left messages
for the Hospital to call
me. Any suggestions out there?

I had 2x Promus drug eluting stents put in 3

a
huge improvement immediately following the procedure.

John -- stent collapse is pretty uncommon, but
it happens for a number of reasons. Did your cardiologist give you any
more info?? There is a Forum Topic recently started on this subject, "Collapsed

Angioplasty.Org Staff, Angioplasty.Org, October 4, 2009
I had 4 stents installed in April 2009, and three
day hospital stay. Total bill was $156,000. 3 stents in one artery, and
1 stent in a second artery. Two months later, I was back in the hospital
where the DR. said one of the stents in the triple-stent artery had collapsed
and could not be reopened. The cost for the second hospital stay of three
days was $26,000. Is there any recourse for collapsed stents?
John Doubledee, Arlington, Texas, USA, October 2, 2009
When I was 32 yrs old I suffered a M.I. caused by one 100% blocked artery
and another blocked 90%, resulting in an angioplasty and subsequently a stent
placed in the one artery 90% blocked. My Cardiologist discovered that the artery
100% blocked had been for years and by the miracle of the human body formed it's
own bypass to compensate the blood flow. After a week in C.C.U. I was released
and continued into rehab for another month. Total cost of treatment: absolutely
nothing! I am so fortunate to live in Alberta, Canada where I have the assurance
and peace of mind that when I or a loved one get seriously ill we can receive
medical attention and treatment and not have to line up at the cashier's office
after discharge (although we still have to pay the $8 for parking). Pretty damn
good for having a small amount taken off my pay at the end of the month. Now,
with all that said and with the risk of feeling an angina attack, it sure pisses
me off when I see a mob of scared individuals in Washington opposing a proposed "socialist" program
to better their quality of life. One such individual held a sign stating "Health
Care Doesn't Work,Just Ask Canada".
Well, here I am saying it does.

just had a stent (aug 2009) after catherization

that down to $28,755. I had an appointment for the procedure so it was

Hi, My father is advised for angioplasty treatment
at Mumbai, India. He has few blockages in his vain, i would like to know
about the cost of the stents
and also which stent to be used ? Indian or imported as the doctor here is
suggesting only Imported ones.
Purav, Mumbai, India, September 15, 2009
Cardiac catheterization (stent insertion or
angiograms) have some risk. My cousin died of a stroke one day after a
cardiac catheterization; generally conceded to be a direct result of it.
When I was diagnosed with a blockage I declined the stent and chose EECP
(enhanced external counterpulsation). It's just as effective, entirely
safe, Medicare approved, and relatively cheap (~$7000 in Philadelphia USA).
But it does involve 35 hours of therapy. After a year I had to go back
for a "tune-up" (another 15 hours). But that was 3 years ago, and I've
been fine. I don't take any prescription drugs either, because I keep my
lipids under control with diet and exercise. EECP is popular in China,
I've heard. But not here in the US because the cardiologists' wallets,
wives, business associates...etc would protest. Luckily, there aren't that
many interventional
cardiologists in China.

Just had one drug eluting stent put in here in
the San Fernando Hospital in Panama. Excellent doctors, good facilities,
caring and professionally competent nurses and great follow up. Cost
was US$21,000 paid by our local insurance coverage down here. Co pay was
$200.I
have no complaints whatsoever and feel much better.
Michael Horton, Panama, Republic of Panama, August 20, 2009
Akbar -- we can not offer medical advice, nor
is it really possible to state which stent is best. These are complicated
decisions and one stent may be better in situation A, while a different
one is better in situation B. We can say that angioplasty and stenting
is done on elderly patients regularly -- what the risks are again is very
specific to the individual patient. Any medical procedure carries a risk.
We appreciate that this is a difficult decision -- one suggestion would
be
to have a
different
set
of
cardiologists
make a recommendation, so that you're confident that the course prescribed
is the best one. And by the way, angioplasty is not strictly speaking an
"operation", but more of a "procedure". It's not considered
surgery, because the patient is awake and the procedure is relatively quick.

My father complained chest pain & underwent angiogram
test at Karachi, Pakistan two days back. Doctor says that he got Two major
block in the main artery which carries blood to heart. They suggested to
do balloon angioplasty surgery and to fix a stent. They claim that Rs.4,50,000
is the best drug eluting stent available and suggest to fix that. (plus
1,00,000 for other charges incl (USD 7000/-). i arrange the Rs.150000/-(
USD 1800/-) My father age 80 year old and he is diabetes (sugar) person.
Can you please advise on this and also tell me which is the best brand
of DES available. also suggest about the risk factor involved in this operation.
Awaiting your reply & thanks in advance for spending your valuable time.
Please help me.
Akbar J., Karachi, Pakistan, August 20,

JM -- studies have shown that in the proper clinical
situation, drug-eluting stents (DES) can offer significant benefits to
the patient, namely when a lesion is at high risk for restenosis (re-blocking).
This may be a narrow lesion, a long lesion, a diabetic patient, etc. In
a wide vessel where the risk of restenosis is low, the difference between
bare metal and drug-eluting stents may not be that great. But this is
a complex topic and many factors (such as patient's ability to comply
with
a year or more of dual antiplatelet therapy) must be taken into consideration.
Angioplasty.Org Staff, Angioplasty.Org, August 20, 2009
FYI-Drug eluting stents aren't worth the additional
cost using present technologies-they have shown limited success to date
and are hyped by the companies in order to make more money. Your health
is the most important thing you have but don't be fooled into using drug
eluting stents when the statistics show no long term benefits over bare
metal stents, to date.
JM, Dublin, Ireland, August 20, 2009
Mike -- FYI, drug-eluting stents are priced at
around $2-3,000@ by the major device manufacturers, with bare metal stents
about one-third of that. For more discussion on these topics, check out
our new discussion of "Health
Care Reform".

There is nothing I can think of that should cost
$108,000 for a ONE DAY procedure. With caps on medical procedures, usually
$250,000, then I pay, it would not take long to eat away at that. The Stents
save lives but is it "life-saving" of "life-extortion"? Do patients have
a choice to make between "life or death" and a $108,000 bill?I think not
but this is like exchanging death for a life of debt that can lead to poverty. Is
it better to be ill debt free, or alive with debt?
Mike, Utah, USA, August 19, 2009
The cost of a Stent is outrageous. We need Universal
Health Care for everyone. Insurance Companies are billing at outrageous
levels to pay for those without
health insurance via those that have it and Medicare.

I returned home today
after a six night stay in an ICU ward following a heart attack (I am
49, do not smoke or drink,
am fit but have a family history of heart disease). I was transferred to
a special heart unit in a larger urban hospital where I underwent an angiogram
and received 4 stents in my heart. I was then returned back to my home
town hospital where I was observed for a further night prior to my release.
Because of my unusual circumstances I am now being transferred to the Cardiologist
who performed the angioplasty for follow ups and recuperation. All the
time I received excellent, prompt treatment from every party concerned
in my care (Paramedics,ER staff, ICU staff, Cardio unit, etc)...and the
cost to me.....nothing, you see I live in Canada where we have universal
health care (granted, we pay $164 per month health contribution as a family)
so I shake my head in dismay at the debate going on down south. Whenever
we have needed the health system here at has been available (last year
my wife was confirmed with breast cancer and her comprehensive treatment
was fantastic) -- it's not perfect, but I would not wish to swap it for
the for the US system.

Bobby -- your timing is amazing! Your question
came in just as President Obama finished his press conference on healthcare
reform. And your question goes to the heart of the matter -- pun intended
-- what do things cost and how are they reimbursed? We applaud your cardiologist
for settling at this lower rate. We assume that this was because you
had no medical insurance. But one of the issues is that everyone winds
up paying
something for the uninsured. The infrastructure, cath lab, etc. used
for your procedure is supported by dollars from elsewhere. We at Angioplasty.Org
sincerely hope that the healthcare reform bill that gets passed is one
that makes such situations as yours simpler to deal with and more equitable
for all.

Sadi -- costs of stents and procedures vary widely,
as you can see from this Forum. It really depends upon where the procedure
is being done. As for the stents themselves, the major drug-eluting stents
approved for use in the U.S. list for approximately $2,000-3,000@ --
bare metal stents are more like $700-800. That's just for the stent. The
procedure,
hospital and medical fees for implantation are additional.

Pravin -- drug-eluting stents in the U.S. cost
about $2,000. Bare-metal about $800. As for life-span, it's more a
question of whether the patient's artery stays open or restenoses (closes
up),
not what the life of the stent is. This varies from patient to patient.

The Editor's comments regarding EDTA chelation
therapy are right on. It is useless if not actually detrimental because
it also affects mineral
balances. This is not a H. pylori ulcer treatment story covered up by
doctors and pharmaceutical firms to protect profits. I have a lot of EDTA
I have
access to for free and am at risk from high LDL, but I would not use
the stuff on myself after reading the NIH articles. I would be happy to
sell
at the outrageous prices being asked, and I could certainly use the money,
but that would be unethical.
My non-stent experience with medical costs in the USA versus India. (I
think this may still be useful info.) Procedure: Valenti technique bunionectomy.
Total Indiana, USA, walk away cost, all money paid in advance: $1950 podiatrist
fee, $9800 outpatient (local anesthesia): $11,750. About $12500 if performed
at Mayo's Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA. Advertised cost for a bunionectomy
on a popular web site for India: $1450. Upon further inquiry with the specific
procedure, the walk away price quoted was $2450...A lot more, but still
a lot less. Guess what, I'm taking a trip overseas. US healthcare, wake
up!
Now for a question from left field that is not directly
associated with the cost of stents: Would it be a useful and beneficial
service to perform
12-point interpretive ECG's for say, $35, for general public, non-critical
health walk-ins in Indiana, USA? The customer/patient would be given the
results to review for themselves, with the idea that if anything were flagged
by the ECG, the customer would visit their primary care physician for further
advice. I believe many put off such testing simply because costs are too
high. Thank you for the wonderful forum.

In Canada we have universal health care where
we pay no premiums and don't have to worry about carrying any insurance.
Most employers do have some type
of health benefit plan that tops up the universal health care to pay for private
hospital rooms, drugs, etc. My husband recently had a heart attack, went to
our local hospital by ambulance, was treated, then given an angiogram.
It was found
that he had a 90% blockage in one artery and a 50% blockage in another. He
was then medevac-ed by air ambulance to the Ottawa Heart Institute about
1,000km
away from home, had an angioplasty done, then was released after a total of
8 days in the hospital with excellent care. Total cost to us... $0. All

(TACT) won't be finished recruiting until 2009 (they have 163 centers)
and when the data has been studied and reported on, we'll bring you the
news. More info about joining the study can be found at ClinicalTrials.Gov.
We look forward to the results, but as of now, there's no real data to
show this therapy is valid. The danger is that patients will self-treat
(and spend money on the drugs) and not get proven therapies.
Angioplasty.Org Staff, Angioplasty.Org, December 7, 2007
Go with chelation, better results, less money
and NEVER see the cardiologist again. Why? Because it works! They probably
won't post this, they have a vested interest in you coming back. Don't
believe me? Read the true stats on current cardiology and stenting.

My father complained chest pain & underwent angiogram test at chennai,
India two days back. Doctor says that he got one major block in the main artery
which carries blood to heart. They suggested to do balloon angioplasty surgery
and to fix a stent. They claim that Rs.1,20,000 is the best drug eluting stent
available and suggest to fix that. (plus 1,00,000 for other charges incl. of
all, stay) ($2,930 for DES and $2440 for other charges) Can you please advise

M. Qureshi -- do you mean "3 arteries" blocked?
Angioplasty.Org Staff, Angioplasty.Org, June 30, 2007
if 3 valves are blocked then what will be the
total cost of angioplasty?
s.a.qureshi, bahawalpur/punjab/pakistan, June 26, 2007
$171,000.00 dollar rip off! ABSOLUTELY! I have
no insurance, and am unemployed (after carrying insurance all my life),
and just had an emergency angioplasty for right coronary artery with
90% blockage after an actual bad heart attack! Two other arteries are 50%
blocked!
I was released from the hospital in less than three days! BILL: $86,000.00
In Las Vegas Nevada, Spring Valley Hospital, and they would reduce it
by 40% if paid in full in 60 days.
HOWEVER: The hospital referred my case to Eligibility
Pal, a patient advocacy group. I am 63, so don't qualify for Medicare or
medicaid in Nevada, although I was told I would get medicaid in other states,
like California. The woman from Eligibility Pal, told me to write a letter
describing my situation, why I could never pay the bill, and to fax it
to her. She would seek a heart charity to pay my bill. A relative of mine
offered to pay up to $20k for me and asked me to negotiate with the hospital.
After almost a month went by with no word and no formal bill being received
from the hospital, I went to the billing center to offer $10k to completely
resolve the bill. The woman at the computer reception desk looked up my
file, and told me I had a zero balance! Wow! "Are you sure it's me!" Yes
it was! I don't know who it was, but it seems that a charity paid most
of my bill, probably the 60%, or what medicare would have paid, and the
hospital wrote off the balance! This is why I never received a bill! So,
they saved my life, and saved my credit, relieved all the stress, and I
love the people of America who run and contribute to charities more than
ever before. Sooo Grateful! I am still in favor of universal health care,
though. I experienced in Canada as a traveling musician.
INFO For you sir: The hospitals charge full boat to uninsured
patients because they know it won't be paid and they then get to write
off a larger amount against their income. They always accept a steeply
discounted payment to resolve the bill! Try to find Eligibility Pal in
your area! If you can't, go to the hospital billing department and ask
them for referrals, and/or NEGOTIATE YOUR BILL! ANY AGREEMENT SHOULD BE
FOR PAYMENT IN FULL, AND GET IT IN WRITING! The organization that called
me works with four hospitals in Nevada. I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY ARE IN OTHER
STATES. GOOD LUCK!
NOTE: My doctors saved my life, but never talked to me
about diet, nor about the necessity to take the meds prescribed. I stopped
the two blood pressure meds because the side effects prevented me from
living (Lisinopril, and metoprolol!) I kept talking the Plavix and Aspirin
even though it seems they can cause bad effects such as bleeding in the
brain and elsewhere. It turns out I was lucky to do that, because I just
read on this site about the heart attacks in patients who stop the aspirin
alone! doctors have to learn to talk to their patients! I could have died
because they just assumed I would do what they say without any doubt or
reconsideration due to horrible side effects! I am exercising, have become
a vegetarian, eating no cholesterol that is found only in flesh of any
kind, except salmon rarely to help stay vegetarian, eat oatmeal every day,
and brown rice occasionally, have lost weight, and my blood pressure is
normal now, after only one month! Hope this helps. I also stopped the Crestor
for lowering my cholesterol because I'M AFRAID OF THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS;
BUT I'm thinking of going back on it after reading info on this web site,
even though they never mention cholesterol lowering medication regarding
re-clogging of a stent. After just reading other posts, I see my bill was
also outrageous! And I still have a few thousand in separate bills from
various doctors and the ambulance. Good Luck! Oh - one more thing: $400
a month in prescriptions from Walgreens is $118 a month from Canada!
J.C., California, USA, May 22, 2007
Chester -- you say you were given the stent in
the ER. Were you in the midst of having a heart attack (acute MI)? If so,
and if the angioplasty was done quickly, the stent may have saved your
heart muscle from more serious and irreversible damage. (By the way, the
stenting is done in a catheterization lab -- the ER is where you were diagnosed
and then sent to the cath lab). If you weren't actually having an acute
episode, that's a different story. Most likely all three arteries weren't
done because you were having an acute episode and cardiologists usually
want to stabilize their patients by doing the "culprit" blockage
first. Then any further work can be done more safely on an elective basis
at a later date (doing all the blockages at the same time may increase
the risk of a complication -- especially in an acute patient). Did the
cardiologist give you any guidance as to your future course of action?
Are you having a follow up? As for the cost, and your having no insurance,
it's a situation that is a terrible outcome of the way the U.S. health
care delivery system works. You can probably negotiate the bill downward
significantly (that's what insurance companies do) but it will still be
very large. The hospital may be able to work with you -- talk to them --
and let the Forum know what happens.

I recently had a non drug coated stent procedure
done on my right side coronary artery in an emergency room. After the procedure,
the doctor told me I still have 2 arteries that were 75% and 90% clogged.
Isn't this ethically wrong? I had no insurance at the time. I just received
a hospital bill in the amount of $171,000. Isn't this rip off?

RE: Forum
Editor and SteveA - "What happened to the $13,000 difference between
the cost and what the insurance paid?" In the States, medical charges
have little meaning. Medicare sets what it pays by procedure with some
adjustment for regional costs. Private insurances also pay their own
set fee schedules, usually about 110-140% of Medicare rates. A patient
with no insurance is usually offered a 30-40% cash discount (off of charges).
If the patient is poor, the account is written off as charity. In this
case, the hospital writes off the $13,000 as "deductions to revenue",
but since it is allowed by contract, it is NOT considered "bad debt" (patient
has assets but refuses to pay) nor "charity care".

Robert, Fullerton,Calif, December 15, 2005
The cost of any medical procedure depends on where
you're having it. Generally speaking, the cost of a drug-eluting stent
is somewhere around $2,500 USD. But the costs of the procedures can vary
wildly. Some U.S. citizens, for example, now travel to Southeast Asia (Thailand,
for example) to have procedures like angioplasties performed at more than
one-third the cost of the same procedure in the U.S. -- and some of the
cardiologists have been trained (and even praxcticed in) the U.S. For example,
Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok advertises a single balloon angioplasty
for $3,400 USD -- even with one drug-eluting stent, you'd be under $6,000
USD. In the United States, a similar procedure might costs triple. We'd
very much like to get patients to let us know how much their procedures
cost -- and healthcare providers too.

a real bang up job in getting the "red fluid" flowing through again.

worth the investment. More power to interventional cardiologists and

how much they are charging at various hospitals in America!!!
Nasir A. Qureshi, TM Marketing, Karachi-Sind , Pakistan, August

Doug -- you're correct that
most public information sources note that the price to hospitals for
Taxus or Cypher stents is below $3,000 each. Your bill no doubt includes
a large list of items, including services, fees, hospital equipment,
etc. For example, the catheterization laboratory in the which procedures
are done costs at least $1.5-2 million. However, you should go over the
bill carefully -- most insurers have big discounts with hospitals so
the actual amount paid is nowhere near the actual bill. However, if you're
not insured (and you'd have a lot of company there) that automatic discount
doesn't exist. Sometimes you can negotiate the bill with the hospital
if you are self-insured; sometimes not. Welcome to Health Care USA 2005.
We would certainly advocate writing your Senator and Representative.

Doug Neeb, Blue Springs, Missouri, June 28, 2005
I just read what the editor
suggested. I have 1 plain, 7 Cypher and 1 Taxus Stent. The Taxus stent
was used after attempts at inserting a Cypher Stent that failed to pass
through an existing stented area. I can tell you that the person trying
to get the Cypher stent through had me pretty much on edge (even with
major drugs). He was drawing back and slamming that stent in repeatedly,
without success. After several failures (I was truly expecting that wire
to come through my chest) he removed it and inserted the Taxus with ease.
Now, was I worried that some damage may have been done with all the slamming
against the stented area that was going on? HELL YES! But, here I am,
almost 5 months later. . .giving testImony. Are they worth 9.46K? Materialistically?
Probably not. But it was probably a lot cheaper than a CABG. So, as it
is in a capitalistic society . . . the better mouse trap gets the bucks.
In this case, the insurance companies pay willingly, and then our future
premiums will be adjusted (UP) accordingly. . .no sweat.
