Not Feeling Well After Stenting (2005 and earlier archive)

Email Bookmark and Share
Many patients feel very well after having a stent implanted, with relief of angina and other symptoms. But some patients have written that they experience the opposite and feel less well, at least for a period. This could be due to a variety of causes. To support others who may be in a similar situation, post here to describe your symptoms, and especially if they were resolved.

• I had a drug eluting stent fitted mid October after 90% closure of RCA diagnosed during angiogram. Started to get post-stent pain two or three days after the PTCA. GP told me that it is not unusual to get some post-stent pain - however have still got it ten weeks later - is this normal ? Have been told that I need to be on Plavix 75 mg od for 9 months - also on Atorvastatin 40mg, Bisoprolol 1.25mg, Ramipril 10mg and Aspirin 75mg - no complications.

• I had 5 stents inserted in July 2005. I had major disease but minor symptoms. Now four months on I have persistent posterior mid-thoracic pain, sometimes sharp, sometimes burning, and some hypersensitivity. It is not exercise related including rowing, cycling, weights etc and a repeat exercise ECG is normal. Thoughts were that was statin related. My CK was slightly raise (450). But a month after stopping the statin the pain is the same. I am a doctor and I can t find an explicable diagnosis and numerous other tests have been negative. It seems too late for stretch pain but from the forum comments I think that several others experience the same. I suspect that this is as good as it gets and I will just have to put up with it.

• Mother in law had 5 stents placed end to end(overlapping) 4 days ago. She had a "mild heart attack" during cardiac catheterization. She also had same symptoms twice the following day releived with 1 nitroglycerin (under the tounge). MD says that is normal and may have been due to some dislodged plaque. She was sent home the following day with aspirin and plavix to tale daily and nitro to take as needed.

• I'm 49 and had 7 stents placed in April/May of 2005. I'm still having chest pain and SOB on a regular basis. The attacks occur mostly in the early evening and at rest. Some of the attacks have been severe enough to send me to the emergency room. Of course everthing checks out find. The doctors are puzzled, but after reading this and other related websites it appears that many others are having very similar problems. Any comments?

• My support goes out to everyone who posted here. After reading the posts, I am SO glad to know that I am not alone!I am 45 and I had a complete blockage in one artery and emergency cath and balloon angioplasty right after. Had a medicated Taxus stent put in. That was in April 2005. Just this past Thanksgiving, 7 months after the stent placement, I had my first symptoms. Every day now, on and off all day, I feel a pinching in my chest, on my left side, usually while at rest, but I felt it for the first time during exercise 2 days ago. I have also been feeling breathless, like I need to force out a sigh. This happens while I am speaking, too. I was dancing recently and wore out very quickly, which made me mad and sad. I called my operating cardiologist and he did not recommend coming in, just to monitor the problem and call if it gets worse. I see him in January for a Nuclear Stress test, which as far as I know, will show how much of my heart muscle has died and see how efficiently the heart is pumping. At my last checkup, about a month ago, my EKG was good and my cardiologist said my heart damage was minimal. I can't help but think that something is wrong, though: I was feeling better for months, and this is happening now. Doesn't feel like I am healing right! I am trying to keep the faith, though: at least I was lucky enough to survive the heart attack!

• To "A concerned Daughter, December 04, 2005 -- Clinical Depression can follow any heart intervention . . . this can lead to fatigue . . .if everything else is a okay. . .have her look into this possibility. I suffered from it, and went on meds for a while . . . I was able to get off of them shortly afterward. Good Luck

• In response to the Australian gentleman (Ash) with the shortness of breath. I had a stent placed during a heart attack a couple years ago. I developed symptoms like you describe. It ended up that I had a mild case of pneumonia. Probably got it in the hospital! Maybe see if you can get a lung scan? Good luck!

• Hi. My mom had an angioplasty with stenting on her 59th Birthday last month. Doctor said she had 75 % blockage in main artery. Procedure went perfectly. No bleeding when she got home. She felt a little flutter in her heart the first few days. She took a week off after the procedure and was well rested, then she went back to her usual daily work the next. But now one month later, she seems to be experiencing fatigue. She also has been experiencing stomach pain, lower back pain, a burning feeling in the upper leg (not the one inserted), pain in her arm muscles. Could it be the drugs she's taking?(Plavix,Asprin,Vascor). She has IBS [irritable bowel syndrome] and I was wondering does IBS affect stenting in any way? She seems to be feeling worse now than she did after the procedure. She spends days in bed. Is that common one month later? Her Doctor said her test results were great but I am concerned! Does anyone have any similar symptoms?
A concerned Daughter, December 04, 2005

• Mr. Ash, your posting reminded me of a problem I had. During one of my many angioplasties (I forget which one) I developed a pain on the left side of my heart that would radiate to the back. I felt something was wrong and was told everything was okay. This pain, at various degrees would always be there. At one point, after an ER visit, I was told it was Pericarditis, as an EKG suggested it was. Well this all lasted eight months and then I was placed back on the table and had 3 more stents installed. I remember being on that table and crying in pain before they went in (radiating from the same place) where they had to give me some serious pain meds. I would get this pain mainly while I was on my back and would have to reposition myself to get it to ease up. Having an angioplasty rules out moving around during the procedure. Well, after that drug killed the pain and I was placed in the recovery room, I insisted that they not let that pain return because I was still not able to move. However, the pain has never returned. So, I believe something was done during an angiogram to cause this pain, and then undone during the next one. Coincidence? I don't think so. I believe it possible (I am not a doctor so I am simply guessing) that a stent was placed in a position that somehow irritated a nerve, more so while I was on my back. Which is why the EKG showed possible pericaditis. The angioplasty that followed, must have placed a stent in a position that caused the "irritating stent" to somehow prevent it from hitting that nerve any longer. So, with that, it is possible for these stents to induce pain and I am sure, with time and data collection, science will map out problem areas, and develope stents for certain areas of the heart to avoid what happened to me, and perhaps many others. (Of course, doctors will have to pay attention and realize there is a problem) Good Luck

• David, you are not clear as to your mom's post- stent pains when she moves. What kind of "niggles" and where? Yesterday I had 3 Taxus medicated stents put in, Next day, I felt and still feel tickling and twitching sensations all over back, ribs, kidneys and hips. I'm not sure if due to prolonged stationary bed rest or something else.
Paul, Redondo Beach, California, USA, November 30, 2005

• I have had 7 angioplasties in 28 months. ANXIETY is the major culprit of the pain, tightness that follows each procedure in my case. This starts at least a day after the procedure. The day of, I am esthatic that I survived, so I feel 110%. The next day I am just way ready to go home. Once in my own surroundings the mind starts to pay close attention to the area the doctors have invaded, and placed foreign objects in. You can't see them, so your mind focuses on them with everything else possible. It gets worse at night when going to sleep . . no distractions here and your chest becomes the total center of attention. It all passes with time. Also, you must remember your heart has been traumatized by the insertion of the stent/s and a healing process is taking place. . .some discomfort and heart quirks may occur now and then. It's a tough position to be in and the rule is, play it on the safe side . . . one should never ignore your signs, but know that mentally, your mind is on edge and at a very hightened stage of ALERT at this point. It's been a week since my last stents. . . same problem everytime. . .Good Luck
RayZ, San Diego CA, November 28, 2005

• David (and others) Both my brother and I have had stents fitted; his after bad (are there good ones!?) angina pains, mine after breathlessness but no pain. After his were fitted he still got pain and challenged his cardiologist "I'm one of your failures". It was explained that his pain originally came from the scarred heart muscle caused by the blockage to the blood supply; having a stent hadn't cured the scar, just stopped it getting worse (and fatal). Only time would ease the situation, which indeed it has. I never had pain prior to the op, and haven't had any since, but I have had anxiety attacks at over fluttery sensations, slight breathing difficulties, and muscle strain from spending too long poised over a PC! It's amazing how an insignificant niggle can be built up in ones mind into a problem....which it ain't. I've mentioned on another thread how valuable I've found cardiac rehab classes, both physically and mentally. I reccommend them to Mum. Regards eugene

• I had one taxus coated stent put in over a year ago. ever since then I have had a lot of chest pain. A recath showed everything fine. Exercise or walking up stairs makes the pain worst. My blockage was 75%. I just feel bad all the time. I wish I had never had the stent put in. JRH Georgia 11-21-05

• G'Day All, I am a 26 Year old Male from Australia. I was shocked when I found that the chest discomfort that I was feeling was a heart attack, I had 1 stent put in to open the artery that was 92% Blocked. There still are 2 more blocked arteries with 40% and 30% Blockage respectively, which my specialist considers not problematic at this stage. I have 4.5 Cholesterol (Perfect), Heart Rate around 70, BP around 118/70. Anyway its been 5 weeks since my angioplasty and I have gradually developed breathing problems, I feel tightness in my chest and/or back when I breathe and at times I have to sigh for a deep breath, this is usually at rest as I have not started any physical activity such as playing sports yet. To me this is a major concern as my specialist has no clue what's causing this, I still have to take 1 aspirin, 1 plavix, 1 cardizem CD and 1 Lipitor tablet every day. I was on Transiderm-Nitro 25 patches until 10 days ago and I think my breathing problem may have gotten worse as I was advised by my specialist to stop using the patches. Can anybody offer any info as to what's causing my breathing problems and tightness in chest when I struggle to breathe? Anyone else shares the same symptoms? Thanks

• Hi, my mum had a serious heart attack 3 months ago, found a blood clot and dissolved it. She had an angiogram and found one artery 95% blocked, she had 2 stents placed. She still gets mild pain now and again, but never feels the need to use her GTN spray. Is this normal to have slight pains after stents and for how long. The pains are just niggles, but eitherway depressing her. We have been told of a few doctors it normal, but no-one is clear on it. So please someone answer my question ? The pains come on when she streching and moves.. nothing like angina pains tho.. could this be due to the opereation of the stents ? PLEASE please soneone help me ,thanks.

• I am 54 year old female. Had stent procedure 4 weeks ago, 10/18/05. 99% blockage. One week after procedure still having minor chest pains. Doctor suggested it was "heartburn" and put me on ZANTAC which has seemed to help. The "cough" you talk about for me was a major side effect of Lisinopril. A drug I came home from the hospital on. I immediately stopped taking it but not after severe coughing and pain in the back of my head and neck. For the most part I am finally starting to feel more like the ME I want to BE...Good luck..My prayers are with you....

• Hi. I had angioplasty 2 weeks ago, Initial test ECG, Stress, Persantine Stress indicated normal but highly likely for cad. Angioplasty revealed 2 blockages in RCA 1-100% reduced to 0 with Taxus stent, 1-99% reduced to 10% with balloon. 3 days later started having chest pain and back pain. Admitted to hosp through er and had second angioplasty. Everything checked out ok. Still have chest pain. Felt better before angioplasty. Can't find a lot of information on this problem and how long it can go on. Any sources??

• I am 52 male, had 2 stents put in after a minor angina a week ago. I went back to ER a day after being released from the hospital due to tightness in my upper left chest near my shoulder. Everything checked out OK and I was released from hospital the next day. My Cardiologist suggested that this is due to post operation stress and anxiety. Now it is a week after my operation and most of my chest discomfort has gradually subsided but I still get what I call some sort of heart muscle spasm!?! I think this is normal after sticking some foreign object in my body and basically messing with my heart. If this does not go away after a few weeks, then I start worrying. Wishing you all speedy recovery.

• I had four stents a month ago. I basically feel well with occasional chest discomfort.I work out daily and am careful to take my meds. When the chest tightness lasts without some relief on it's own I slip a nitro under my tongue and it helps in short order. I'm 80 yrs young with this problem. The Dr. thinks I am good for another 20 yrs. I'm all for positive thinking. You young guys stay the course. They may soon come up with something to take care of our after effects.

• I had 3 stents installed on Aug 11th 2005. Apart from expected discomfort at the entry site and 2 days of drug-induced headache and nausea, I have been OK. However, I still get mild angina pain. Will it last and how soon will I be able to resume vigourous exercise (running/swimming/cycling) without danger?

• I'm 49 and had six stents in April and another stent added in June. I have almost daily chest pain which moves to my back, left shoulder and down my left arm, but it is usually at rest. My doctor says that it is not heart related because it happens at rest and the duration of the pain is too long. Any comments?

• Had 3 stents to cover 4 blockages in LAD about 5 weeks ago. Ever since had had slight chest discomfort -some fluttering and a pain in upper left chest area and under left arm. At times the pain is a sharp one time event but other times it is a sharp two or three time event. Scares me because never felt any of this pre-stent!! Had a second stress test done with persantine and it showed all stents are working fine with good blood flow. I am a 59 year old male in otherwise good health but confused and concerned.

• Hi, I'm a 56 yo female. I had a stent placement 2days ago in the proximal LAD, (the widow maker). I was 90% occluded. I feel worse now than before I had the procedure. I have a dull ache in the Right side of my chest all the time, worse when I take a deep breath. Will be seeing my doctor tomorrow.

• Female 54, blocked RCA, did 2 stents, I feel like sighing, and the fluttering is driving me crazy. Not sleeping properly. Every ache/pain scares me to death. Mentioned to the cardiolgist and I got the "'female complaining glazed eye look''. I have nowhere to turn. Went in car to store for first trip driving myself, and just about dragged home. Also Nausea now and then, I read the TAXUS can cause this. I had complained of SOB not so much pain as heaviness in my chest. I won't even go into what the dr's told me. I only had the darn stents put in last Thurs, so for me, its only 5 days. Got a real sharp one time only pain, and scared me silly. Whats up with this fluttering and like a bubble feeling. Dr. said I should feel nothing, I have news for him. Will I ever feel fine again? I hope so. Thanks.

• Rita -- Thanks for writing in to begin with, As you can see, your feeling that you thought you should have felt better right away is shared by a number of readers. It is disturbing to us at Angioplasty.Org that we have patients writing into our site that have been given little, if any, information on what to do AFTER the angioplasty. This is a topic we have brought up several times with companies and organizations and are hoping we can secure funding to be able to provide a more comprehensive after-care section soon. As we say in several places on Angioplasty.Org, stenting and angioplasty are not cures for atherosclerosis -- they are only a mechanical solution to what is essentially a biological problem. A fix, not a cure. Some of the cause of coronary artery disease is genetic and not really something patients can do much about. What patients can do, however, is play a significant role in reducing the risk factors that are under their control, such as diet, stopping smoking, exercise, etc.

As for your specific complaint, has the coughing you originally reported subsided? Is the fluttering feeling in your chest gone? Your complaint about your leg wan't mentioned in your original post, but this too is shared by many. See our topic on possible nerve damage. Damage, or at least temporary trauma to the nerve, can occur in the femoral (groin) approach because the femoral nerve runs relatively close alongside the femoral artery and always runs the risk of getting irritated, etc.. This is not a big complication in numbers, but it does occur, and while the pain and numbness is not necessarily permanent -- it always should be addressed. The other topic patients have been writing in about is complications from femoral closure devices, like AngioSeal, etc. While these devices have actually added to patient comfort and speed of recovery, and have eliminated a number of complications, they have introduced their own unique set of complications. Again, not large in number, but complications nonetheless (you didn't mention if the doctor had used such a device in your case). We can't give you medical advice. What we can give is the knowledge that your complaints are shared by others and urge you to seek medical attention that will take your complaints seriously and offer treatment.

• hi again it is now 12 weeks since I had my angioplasty and I am still having pain in my groin and down the leg, I can only walk short distances with it becoming very painful, my cardiologist insists it has nothing to do with the procedure, but it has only come about since having it done. Has any one else had this problem and how long did it last?

• My husband who is 39 had 4 stents in Oct. 04 after heart attack and 3 more in May 05. Day after stent he experienced constant chest pressure, it appears to have subsided, however he still experiences it in the morning and at night. Dr. says this is normal after stenting and should go away after 3 mos. Dr. said he's experiencing coronary spasms.

• I had a cyper stent implant in my RCA bypass 2 months ago. Later returned to another hospital for SOB and chest tightness. While implanting a Taxus stent into distal LAD via my LIMA bypass serious spasm which the Cardio said was due to tortuous nature of LIMA. 2 weeks later after similar chest discomfort another Taxus was put into my Ramus of LAD. It is now 1 week after last implant but have severe nausea some chest awareness and tired after moving around. Stress test after last stent showed some ischemia and evidence of an old silent MI. Is this normal particularly after 2 different stent types? Could the nausea be a stent side effect or due to meds (Plavix, Asp, Nitro patch, Cardizem, Diovan and Glucotrol since I am also diabetic). Also concerned since I am on Coumadin for a mech Aortic Valve. Highly appreciate any advice or comments

• I AM 45 YEARS OLD AFTER TWO MI'S AND THREE STENTS I STILL HAVE THE SAME CHEST PAIN IN THE CENTER OF MY CHEST. THREE CATHS LATER EVERY THING LOOKS FINE. AM I GOING CRAZY? OR IS THIS PAIN REAL? AND IF SO WHY MY DOCTORS DON'T KNOW

• I'm 47 years old. Had a long (33m) drug eluting stent implanted last week (1/6) in LAD following 99.9% occlusion - don't ask!!! 2 days after op, I started experiencing tightening of chest, odd flutter, general discomfort in central chest, just like everybody else here. Its not brought on by exertion, its there all the time. My cardiologist says that technically this should not happen but he hears it so often (from men in particular) that he thinks there may be something in it but doesn't really know why. Surely the catheter scratches on the way in? Surely the radio opaque dye they use upsets things? I also beleive that anxiety has a big part to play. Who knows? I'm seeing the man again on Thursday and will share anything enlightening he may decide to share with me......:-)

• Roger, thanks for sending in your story. To your question about "does anyone ever answer these questions" -- this Forum is a feature which we feel is important to host on Angioplasty.Org. But it's not an "Ask the Doctor" service -- it's made up of user comments -- sometimes that will include doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals. Every once in a while we'll chime in with some information or a resource that may be helpful, but the main purpose is for users to trade stories and information that can help them -- at least to feel that they are not the only ones experiencing something. Also, giving medical advice over the internet about an area as complex as coronary heart disease is not necessarily helpful -- general advice, yes, but specific patient reactions are best discussed with the patient's cardiologist -- especially pain and discomfort issues which are often very subjective (everyone experiences pain differently). That being said, there have been a number of patients with similar complaints since this topic was started just two months ago. We'll see if we can get more specific information, but we would encourage users to discuss these symptoms with their cardiologist (preferably the one who did the procedure) and report back any comments that might be helpful. By the way, do you know which stent was used?

• I'm a 58-year-old male who just had a drug-eluting stent placed in the LAD on Friday past. The artery was 85% blocked. This is my third stent, having had 2 non-drug eluting stents placed in the RCA and the PDA 4 years ago following a heart attack. I feel generally great, but have anxiety like never before and am also experiencing similar chest discomfort similar to that mentioned elsewhere on this forum. My question is - does anyone ever answer these questions about post-stenting pain and discomfort???

• Having had five angioplasties in 18 months I can tell you that every experience differed somewhat with each. The fourth angioplasty, I experienced pain that lasted 8 months until the last angioplasty. The biggest problem for each one was my mental state. With that said, I can tell you that many symptoms manifested, that were magnified and this was simply due to some form of anxiety. If you hurt a finger, you can bet it will always be in the way and seem to get re-injured during the healing process . . . we just become more aware that we have a problem with it, and notice every little thing that happens to it. I can see where ignorance can be blissful . . . if we were dumb animals and not aware as to what requiring this procedure means, we'd all be better off. We know we are mortal, and the need for an angioplasty sort of lets you know how close we are coming to proving it. Just give it all time to heal physically and mentally. I'm sure I'll be back on the table . . . but until then, I'm enjoying the time each angioplasty has given me. . .even with the anxiety. Good luck.

• R. Ward, i also had a cough after my stent placement, and it turned out to be my medication. I told my doctor, and he changed my meds, and the cough went away almost immediately. Call your doctor and make an appointment to see him. I felt a little weird after my stent placement also. It lasted for a while. Our conditions mught be different, so i cant tell you how long you will feel like you do, but just call your doc and tell him how your feeling. Hang in there. Its scary, but you can do it.

• I'm 48 and had 6 stents put in on 4/18. I'm still not feeling well. I have fairly regular chest pain and shortness of breath. A second angiogram revealed the stents are working fine. Something is not right? Any comments?

• After a massive heart attack, I had a stent implaced in an emergency procedure. 15 days later 5 more stents were placed. It has been a week since the last procedure. Are minor tightness and palpatations to be expected during the early stages of recovery?

• Ken, can you be more specific? What problems still exist and have you discussed this with the operating cardiologist??

• I am a 52 year old man and had a stent placed a week ago. Although I've been taking it real easy, getting lots of rest, I still don't feel right. Slight nausea, light headed, very faint chest pressure, low energy. Is this normal. The Doc said there was no damage to the heart since I went in immediately following the initial symptoms.

• I had a stent put in just a week ago. I feel great but I am waking up in the middle of the night with some tremors. I hope it is just one of the meds. I am using the patch as I quit smoking the day I was hospitalized. Maybe that has something to do with it. I have a call into my doctor and I'll let you know what he says. I'm also feeling a small dime size lump at the point of entry. I'll ask about that too.

• I am also 59 and had angioplasty with 2 stents on 21 March. I have similar symptoms to yours and will see a consultant next week. If I find out anything useful I wil let you know. Good luck!

• I had angioplasty 6 days ago. I feel fine, breathing good, not out of breath and my memory response is much better than before the procedure. Is this a bonus? No bleeding after the closure.

• Hi I am 59 and had angioplasty with 3 stents 10 days ago. I am not feeling as well as I would have thought I would be, very tired, fluttering feeling in chest on small activity, is this normal? how long untill I can get back to every day living? I have also developed a cough that seems to come for no reason. I have been given no information as to after care and had the impression that I would be right as rain a few days after the procedure.

• I have had the same symptoms: Tightness in the chest & throat, dizzy spells, a very fluttery feeling in my chest, low BP & erractic pulse. I was back in the hospital & the tests came out ok...no stent rejection (Mine was last week), no heart attack!! It's very scary & I wish I knew what was going on... it's like a weird spell that I had once BEFORE the angioplasty & stent, and 2X since!

• Ashok, If these are symptoms you have never had before, I suggest you see your cardiologist. You could be suffering form high blood pressure , perhaps due to stress and worry, it could also be a gastric problem like acid reflux. The blood rushing in the head sounds like it could be either your blood pressure or stress. If it is stress, a trip to your doctor will put your mind at rest. I am pretty sure it is not related to your angioplasty...but you need to put your mind at rest.

• I am from India. I had angioplasty on 18th December. 12x3 mm stent on one artery which had 90% blockage. The surgeons left another artery which was 50 to 60% blocked without procedure as they felt it can be reversed with medication. The procedure was totally painless for me thank God. I had tightness og the chest and throat and dizzy spells the week after angioplasty and the day after angioplasty my BP fell to very low levels. The doctors say it was due to dehydration. I didn't have to wait with my leg straight as they used some seal which sealed off the hole in an hour. Now after 3 weeks I get feeling like acidity burning in my stomach up to throat and as if blood is rushing to my head. It lasts for a few seconds but is scary. If anyone can throw some light ..please advise.
